What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Plasma is the liquid portion of whole blood. It is composed largely of water and proteins, and it provides a medium for red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to circulate through the body. Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are blood cells that cause blood clots and contain a range of growth factors that are responsible healing and repair of tissue.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a concentration of platelets suspended in a small amount of plasma after centrifugation. Typically, the concentration of platelets in PRP is five-fold greater than normal. PRP is used to treat injuries and to restore damaged tissues.
PRP can be combined with ALMI Autologous Nanofat Transfer, where we harvest some of your own body’s fat cells, which contain valuable stem cells. The fat is processed and micronized (liquified), combined with PRP and then administered in the same manner dermal fillers are injected.
How is PRP collected?
- Blood is withdrawn from a patient’s arm and collected in tubes
- The tubes with the blood are placed in a centrifuge and spun using a carefully determined protocol.
- Centrifuging separates the red and white blood cells and platelets and concentrates them at various levels in the tubes.
- Blood plasma that is rich in platelets is drawn off from the appropriate level for therapeutic use.
- Prior to use the platelets are activated to release the healing growth factors.

HOW IT WORKS
How does PRP work ?
When the PRP is administered into the skin, scalp or joints, the platelets release their growth factors. The growth factors send out signals to other cells of the body to rush to the place of injury or damage.
Fibroblasts, which is the cell type that creates collagen, are activated. Collagen is what gives skin a youthful appearance but is produced less as we age.
Another cell activated during the repair process is the pre-adipocyte cell, which is a cell type that can convert into a fat cell. This is especially important in the face where fat is needed to fill out lines and to contour the face.
Before I was seen by Dr. Howton, I had horrible knee pain due to osteoarthritis which kept me from doing basic things that I wanted to do. My knee would ache and swell at the end of the work day. I was unable to ride my bike. It got to a point where I couldn’t do my nightly walk which, as an active person, was devastating.
